Girls Basketball: Waska, Morris/CA win in 6AA-South

Minnewaska held on to clip West Central South Conference rival Benson 58-53 at Glenwood and Morris/Chokio-Alberta upended Breckenridge 59-32 at Morris Thursday to open the Section 6AA-South girls basketball tournament.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta (20-4) will play Osakis at 6 p.m. Saturday at University of Minnesota-Morris. The nightcap at 7:30 p.m. will see Minnewaska (18-7) up against either Long Prairie-Grey Eagle or West Central Area.

Nicole Gillespie netted 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half and Stef Strobel scored all of her 13 points in the first half to help the Tigers advance.

Minnewaska, which led by 15 at one point, got four free throws from Brittany Mensing in the final 14 seconds to seal the win. Emily Roering sparked the Lakers' attack with a game-high 24 points.

Benson got within one at 54-53 on Emily Auch's putback with 30 seconds left. Abby Fragodt had 12 points and 12 rebounds to pace Benson.
