Girls basketball: Wildcats pounce on Braves

NEW LONDON —  The Wildcats shot better than 50 percent (30 of 57) to beat the Benson Bravews 74-36 in a non-conference girls basketball game on Thursday.

New London-Spicer, now 10-0, led 39-26 with three minutes gone in the second half but then pulled away.

 Nine players scored for the Cats. Taylor Thunstedt finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 steals.

Ashlynn Geister added 15 points, Olivia Setterberg 10 and Brianna Fredrick 8.

Geister and Jessica Johnson led the Cats’ 34-20 gap in rebounds.

Emma Peterson sank 4 three-pointers on the way to scoring 20 points for the Braves. Hannah Ricard was next with 10 points.

Greta Walsh scored 16 points, Bailey Koch hooked 15 rebounds and Kristen Klaben grabbed another 12 boards for Litchfield, but the Dragons were only 10-for-34 from the field en route to falling to 6-2.

Litchfield made five 3-pointers and five shots from inside the arc while going 4-for-8 from the free throw line. But the Lakers (5-4) made eight more field goals, including going 7-for-15 from three-point range.

Canby 57, KMS 54

The Canby Lancers came out firing at the gym in Kerkhoven to take a 13-point lead by intermission.

The Fighting Saints regrouped at the break but couldn’t catch their Camden Conference rival and fell 57-54.

It was the first loss for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg after a 7-0 start.

Canby prevailed with balanced scoring and then free throws down the stretch when the Saints were forced to foul. Canby finished with 13 points at the line and KMS 6.

Rochelle Kallhoff with 16 points led five Lancers with eight or more points.

Samantha Dunn finished with 15 for the Saints. After that came Ali Krieger with 11 and Maddie Strandberg with 10.

The Saints posted a 38-30 advantage in rebounds led by Dunn with 11.

MACCRAY’s Brooklyn Gould and Taylor Grussing both scored 8 points, and Aleah Schwitters had 5 rebounds.
