SAUK RAPIDS — The Willmar girls basketball team righted its ship a bit on Friday night, clipping Sauk Rapids-Rice 57-36 in a Central Lakes Conference game.

Willmar improved to 3-1 in the CLC, 5-4 overall, and ended a three-week slump during which the Cardinals lost four of five, including both games in the Wild-Card tournament last week.

“It was a nice bounce-back game,” said Cardinals head coach Dustin Carlson. “It was a game we knew we should win, but we finally scored some points and got a little confidence going.”

Willmar had some trouble adjusting to using a zone defense and led 32-25 at halftime. But the players got the hang of the zone and limited the Storm to just 11 second-half points.

“We were dominant in the second half,” Carlson said. “It took time to get used to playing zone.”

Courtney Magnuson led the Cardinals with 14 points and McKenzie Hastad had 8 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Lexi Orlowski scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

The Cardinals are off until traveling to play Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
