Girls Golf: Minnewaska distant 2nd heading into final round of state meet

JORDAN — Five-time state champion Minnewaska has an uphill climb to earn its sixth title in the last eight years.

The Lakers have sophomore Jenna Janu in a fifth-place tie and senior Alexis Guggisberg tied for seventh, but defending Class AA champion Detroit Lakes carded a 297 Tuesday, 19 shots better than Minnewaska, on the first day of competition at Ridges at Sand Creek.

Natalie Roth’s 70 and defending medalist Kate Smith’s 72 are the top two scores in the tournament and paced Detroit Lakes’ fast start. After Janu’s 76 and Alexis Guggisberg’s 77, Minnewaska also got a 79 — tied for 11th — from eighth-grader Ashlyn Guggisberg, an 84 from junior Ellen Stensrud, a 95 from sophomore Ariel Ostrander and a 115 from freshman Annika Pederson.

Minnewaska won five straight titles from 2006-10.

Also tied for 11th is Litchfield sophomore Kennedy Sommerfeld. Also for Litchfield, junior Alex Tipka recorded a 98. Lauren Dietz, a senior from New London-Spicer, opened with a 97.

Final-round play today starts at 11:40 a.m.

BECKER — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart senior Carly Schmalz sits in a three-way tie for eighth place after the first round of the Class A tournament Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club.

Schmalz notched an 87, seven shots off the pace set by Hannah Kruger of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

MACCRAY senior Baillee Hauser is tied for 15th at 90, while Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa teammates, sophomore Peyton Miller and senior Jordan Grundemann, fired a 95 and 100, respectively.

Badger-Greenbush-Middle River has a seven-shot lead over Legacy Christian Academy in the team standings, 369 to 376.
