Goalie Johnika Wodash rejected all three Austin shots in the shootout.

Willmar’s second straight win after five losses to open the season gave the Cardinals first place in the Girls Hockey Classic.

Riley Schneider, from Johnston, tied the game 1-1 in the first three minutes of the second frame.

The Packers (3-5) went up again, 2-1, a minute later on a tally by Myla Hoium. It stayed that way into the ninth minute of the third period.

The JV combination eighth-grader Hannah Kobienia from freshman Brooke Oveson and eighth-grader Natasha Turrubiates connected at 8:28 to knot it up 2-2. It was Kobienia’s first varsity goal.

The 8-minute overtime passed without a score. The shootout followed. Austin goalie Mara Overby turned away scoring attempts by Shelby Schneider and Riley Schneider but Johnston was able to break the ice.

Wodash ended with 25 saves and Overby 34.
