Girls hockey: Cards top Blue Devils
WADENA — Shelby Schneider scored twice and the Willmar Cardinals topped Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek in a non-conference game Friday in Wadena.
After the Blue Devils scored 5 minutes into the game, Samantha Block tied it up with a goal at 8:37. Schneider put one in at 14:03 to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
We came out a little slow,” Cardinals’ head coach JaColby Anderson said. “But as the game picked up, we picked up our speed a little.”
LPGE/WDC tied it up in the second, and Willmar didn’t score again until Miranda Roelofs gave the Cardinals the lead again at 3:12 in the third. Schneider provided a cushion with her second goal of the game at 12:38.
The Cardinals made 36 shots on goal against the Blue Devils’ eighth-grade goalie Angela Hanson.
“She was tough,” Anderson said. “She kept her team in the game the whole time.”
The Willmar defense only allowed 14 shots on goal with Johnika Wodash in the net.
The Cardinals next play 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host St. Peter.
