Girls Hockey: Red Wing overwhelms Cardinals

NEW HOPE — Willmar was outshot more than 2-to-1 as the Cardinals fell 8-1 to Red Wing in the first round of the Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper Tournament Thursday.

The Wingers, averaging nearly 5 goals a game entering the tournament, led 3-0 after two periods before netting 5 goals in the third period.

Shelby Schneider pocketed Willmar’s lone goal on a power play midway through the third.

“That’s probably the best first line I’ve seen in girls hockey,” said Willmar coach JaColby Anderson of the Wingers. “All three of them are (NCAA) Division I prospects. Overall we did a good job competing against them.”

The Cardinals were outshot 45-19 as Johnika Wodash made 37 saves for Willmar. The Wingers (10-3) rattled off 19 shots alone in the opening period.

Willmar (3-9-1) plays again today at 6:15 p.m. in the consolation bracket against either the host Falcons or the Mahtomedi Zephyrs.
