WILLMAR — The River Lakes Stars outshot Willmar 42-23 on the way to a 6-2 win at the Cardinal Arena on Thursday to end the Cardinals’ win streak at four.

River Lakes came out firing putting 17 shots on Willmar goalie Madison Sandberg for a 4-1 lead after one period.

Rachel Prozinski’s second goal of the stanza was a a 15-footer from the slot perfectly place just below the cross bar. It was the first of two consecutive powerplay goals by the Stars (7-3-3).

Willmar coach JaColby Anderson said the Stars did a good job executing the power play.

“They really cycled the puck well and drawing us out of position. Overall, they did a good job controlling the puck.”

Laurin Sing and Brooke Mayer notched goals for the Cardinals.

Shelby Teal, Sydney Caron, Erin Porwoll and Shaye Cogelow-Ruter also scored goals for the Stars.

Shana Clark, the winning goalie, stopped 21 Willmar salvos. Sandberg made 36 saves.

The Cardinals outscored opponents 21-5 during their four-game win streak but didn’t look as sharp this time out after only one practice since Saturday’s upset win over Mankato East.

The Stars beat Willmar 4-3 on Dec. 4 and will meet again Jan. 15 in Willmar. This meeting was non-conference, the remnant of a canceled invitational.
