Tribune Staff Report
WILLMAR -- Erin Porwell scored 4:05 into sudden death and River Lakes posted a 2-1 victory over Willmar in Central Lakes girls hockey at the Cardinal Arena on Senior Night on Thursday.
Porwell scored off a faceoff in the Willmar zone.
The Cardinals outshot the Stars 41-32. The Stars' goaltender faced 17 shots in the third period, letting only a shot by senior KyLee Hulcher get by her.
The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the game's second minute when Michaela Curran released a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that cleared goalie Bayley Young's right shoulder.
Willmar had some good chances but failed to have skaters in position to whack at rebounds.
"I felt we outplayed them but Jungles made some nice saves," said Willmar coach Jason Mayer. "We missed some opportunities."
The teams tied the first time 2-2.
Willmar will try to remedy it's goal deficiency (1 goal in the last six periods) when it host Brainerd/Little Falls on Thursday to end the schedule.
The Stars host Fergus Falls, also next Thursday, in their regular-season finale.
