Girls Hockey: White Hawks too much for Cardinals
WILLMAR — Mound Westonka picked up its 13th win of the season Friday, beating the host Willmar Cardinals 8-3 at the Civic Center’s main arena.
The White Hawks struck in the first minute when Liz Schepers got a full-blowin’ half-ice breakaway and beat Johnika Wodash with a precise wrist shot over the goalie’s blocker.
Mound Westonka made it 2-0 on a power play in the frame’s final minute, possessing the puck without interference until Abby Brustad got a clear look from the left porch off a rebound.
Schepers scored twice more in the second period as the Hawks blanketed the Willmar zone unleashing 20 shots. But Willmar maintained the gap at two on goals by Hannah Kobienia and Riley Schneider, out of 11 shots on freshman goalie Emma Polusny.
Schneider’s second goal at 4:14 of the third made it 5-3 but the White Hawks lifted off with three goals in a 2:20 span starting at 6:01.
“We let it slip away and had a little let-up,” said Willmar coach JaColby Anderson. “We knew we had a tough game coming in. They are a solid team and will be good for a while.”
Wodash made 47 saves facing 55 shots. Willmar put 31 on Polusny. The White Hawks two top scorers last night were also freshmen, Elliana Burris and Schlepers.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday to face Alexandria at home.
