Girls Hockey: Willmar rallies to snap Mankato West's win streak
WILLMAR — Heavily covered after winning the faceoff to start the second period, Willmar center Shelby Schneider nonetheless was able get a stick on a feed from sister Riley carrying the puck down the left wing and direct it into the net for what turned out to be the game-winning goal with just seven seconds elapsed in the frame.
Riley Schneider would add an empty-net score in the last minute to cap the 4-2 Willmar victory that ended a three-game Mankato West winning streak. The win over a section 2A rival hiked the Cards’ record to 3-7-1.
Mankato West led 2-1 after once frame on a pair of goals by Callie Looft sandwiching a marker by sophomore forward Jordan Sankey at 11:10. Sankey scored again to tie game 2-2 at 8:15 of middle frame.
Willmar sophomore goalie was sharp stopping 26 shots. Willmar poured 32 shots on Maggie Casey at the other end of the Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals play Mankato East/Loyola (9-3), another section opponent, at 3 p.m. on Saturday back at the Cardinal Arena.
