Girls Hockey: Willmar's season ends with 4-2 loss in 2A semifinals

MOUND -- The Willmar girls hockey team's season ended in the Section 2A semifinals with a 4-2 loss to No. 1 Mound Westonka on Saturday evening.
The teams were well matched. The White Hawks fired 34 shots on Willmar goalie Baylie Young while the Cardinals were able to fire off 30 shots on Mound-Westonka netminder Samantha Scobee. The White Hawks outshot Willmar 16-7 in the opening period to take an early 2-1 lead.
Mound-Westonka scored three minutes into the contest before KyLee Hulscher scored on a Willmar power play seven minutes later. Brooke Mayer and Paige Davis assisted on the goal.
The White Hawks kept Willmar off the scoreboard in the second period while scoring midway through the period to grab a two-goal lead. Both teams scored in the third with Willmar's coming with 2:47 remaining when Mayer and Hulscher assisted on Rebecca Freese' power-play goal.
Willmar, which was seeded No. 4, ends the season 14-10-2. The White Hawks advance to the 2A championship game to play No. 3 Hutchinson (14-12), which eliminated No. 2 Mankato East/Loyola 5-2 Saturday.
