Girls soccer: Alex trounces Willmar

WILLMAR — Four goals in a span of two minutes allowed Alexandria to go on and beat Willmar 7-2 in a Central Lakes Conference match Thursday.

Alexandria (5-0, 6-1) scored the match’s only goal in the first half before erupting for six in the final 40 minutes of play. Alexis Becerra tied it up at 1-1 for Willmar (0-4-1, 1-4-2) five minutes into the second half after receiving a corner kick from Jennyfer Jimenez.

But Alexandria then got a goal from Karsen Granning and another three from Anna Spanbauer over the 52nd and 53rd minutes. Willmar goalie Jordan Martins got hurt trying to dive for the ball on Spanbauer’s first tally. The senior stayed in for the remainder of the match, playing with a lot of pain said Willmar coach Chelsea Brown.

Jimenez then got Willmar back on the scoreboard by scoring from outside the 18-foot box in the 59th minute. Alexandria then got two more goals from Hayley Burns to complete the scoring.

Willmar’s scheduled match with Princeton for today has been cancelled. The Cardinals’ next match is Tuesday in Sartell.
