Girls Soccer: Cardinals shut out by Tech
ST. CLOUD — The Willmar girls soccer team played a strong defensive game but couldn’t get its offense untracked and fell 1-0 to St. Cloud Tech Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference match at St. Cloud State University.
Tech’s Marren Pfannenstein netted the game’s only goal with about two minutes left in the first half.
The Cardinals allowed Tech just one shot on goal in the second half.
“Our defense is stellar,” said Willmar head coach Chelsea Brown. “They were working so hard and (goalie Jordan Martins) played the game of her life. She made some beautiful saves.”
Martins made six saves and Cardinals defender Riley Schneider also turned back a Tech shot.
Willmar hasn’t scored in four matches since opening the season with a 3-0 win over Glencoe-Silver Lake.
The Cardinals managed two shots on goal Thursday.
“We had a couple of opportunities, a couple of corner kicks, but we just couldn’t get it in the net,” Brown said. “We really kicked up (our defense) into high gear. We were goal hungry but it just didn’t happen.”
The Cardinals, now 1-2-2 overall, play at New Ulm at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Tech improved to 1-2-2.
