Girls Soccer: Willmar falls in OT at Apollo
WILLMAR — St. Cloud Apollo scored in the third minute of overtime to edge the Willmar Cardinals 2-1 on Thursday evening in a Central Lakes girls soccer match.
Coach Chelsea Brown said the Cardinal girls dominated the second half — holding the Eagles without a shot-on-goal — and into overtime just before the game-ending goal was scored.
“Jordan (Martins, the Willmar goalie) dove had the ball in her hands when the girl kicked it in. Jordan was hit in the jaw on the play and the refs didn’t see it. The trainer thinks she may have a concussion.”
Jennyfer Jimenez scored for Willmar 16 minutes into the second half to tie the game.
“It was a corner kick and she put it right into the net. An amazing shot,” said Brown.
Willmar had an 8-6 edge in shots-on-goal.
It was the first win for Apollo (1-6-1, 1-11-1), which moves ahead of Willmar (0-7-1, 1-7-2) in the standings.
