GLENCOE -- Junior Jennyfer Jimenez and sophomore Shelby Schneider each scored goals and another sophomore, Lexi Dahlberg, got the shutout in goal as the Willmar Cardinals girls soccer team opened a new campaign Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Glencoe-Silver Lake on the road.

After a scoreless first half, at 44 minutes, Jimenez, a center-forward, found the back of the net after gathering a feed up the middle from junior midfielder Jordan Martins, who has made the switch from goalie where she started the past two years.

At the 52:00 mark, sophomore Stephanie Thompson struck a crisp crossing pass that Schneider one-time past the Panthers' keeper Zoe Christensen for a 2-0 bulge.

Willmar had an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.

"We were winning the balls in the air and we used our defense a lot in passing," said Willmar coach Chelsea Brown. "This team plays so well together; they rely on one another."

Willmar plays its home opener Tuesday at the Kennedy pitch against Hutchinson, another Section 2A rival important for post-season seeding.
