Girls Tennis: BKMS' Fragodt wins Section 5A singles title; Litch's Black-Johnson are doubles champions
SARTELL -- Abby Fragodt qualified for her fourth individual state tournament as the Benson/KMS won two matches in straight sets to win the Section 5A singles title Tuesday at Gold's Gym.
Benson/KMS will also be sending Catherine James and Lauren Alsaker to the state tournament after they fell 6-0, 6-4 to Litchfield's Ellie Black and Lizzie Johnson.
The state individual tournament is Oct. 29-30 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
After receiving a first-round bye, Fragodt beat Jackie Stifter of Glencoe-Silver Lake 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. The Benson/KMS senior then upended Erin Stocker of St. Cloud Cathedral 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 in the final.
Black and Johnson also had a bye in the first round and before downing James and Alsaker in the final the Litchfield duo beat Datriana Jensen and Chelsey Goff 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Jensen and Goff would then beat Carly Skillings and Brianna Rueter of Melrose in the third-place match.
Losing their first-round matches were Megan Bergeson of New London-Spicer in singles and the Litchfield doubles team of Marin Haugo and Kristen Solbrack.
