Girls Tennis: Litchfield’s Spreiter/Sommerfeld advance to state tourney

COLLEGEVILLE — Litchfield juniors Kalley Spreiter and Kennedy Sommerfeld qualified for the state individual tournament after winning the true second doubles match during the final rounds of the Section 5A individual tournament Monday at St. John’s University.

Spreiter and Sommerfeld are Litchfield’s first entrants at the state tournament since Ellie Black won the 5A singles title in 2010. This year’s tournament is Oct. 24-25 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

The Litchfield duo won their first two matches last week before falling to eventual champions Lauren Athman/Claire Carney of Providence Academy in the semifinals Monday. Spreiter and Sommerfeld then swept Mattea Eckstein/Daisha Meyer of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the third-place match and Sara Laudenbach/Lisa Neuman of Annandale in the true second match.

Falling just short of also advancing to the state tournament was New London-Spicer’s Lisa Dobbeleare. The senior won her first two matches, fell in the semifinals, bounced back to win the third-place match to force a true second match, where she fell in straight sets to section runner-up Danielle Gannon of Holy Family Catholic.

Eva Sullivan of Providence Academy won the singles title.
