Girls tennis: Minnewaska sends 2 doubles teams to state

SARTELL — Minnewaska will be sending two doubles teams to the Minnesota State Tournament next week.

The Minnewaska doubles team of Jada Hoffman and Ellen Stensrud defeated Lakers teammates Rachel Riley and Makenna Hanson 6-2, 6-2 in the Section 6A championship match Tuesday at the Fitness Evolution tennis club.

In the singles championship, Osakis’ Taylor Kraemer dropped just two games in her four victories on Tuesday. She defeated Sauk Centre’s Bethany Ellis 6-0, 6-0 in the title match.

Hoffman and Stensrud turned back Morris/Chokio-Alberta’s Kaitlyn Vogel and Brittany Cardwell 6-0, 6-3 on Monday. On Tuesday the Lakers pair defeated Melrose’ Kenedy Meyer and Kelly Kennedy 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and they set down Osakis’ Katie Anderson and Alexa Hoffarth in the semifinals.

Riley and Hanson opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sauk Centre’s Sophia Rick and Nicole Meyer on Monday. In Tuesday’s quarterfinals, Riley and Hanson squeezed by Benson/KMS’ Susan Zniewski and Kelsey Rajewski 7-5, 6-4. Zniewski and Rajewski advanced with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over LPGE/USA’s Payton Long and Tori on Monday.

In Tuesday’s semifinals, Riley and Hanson defeated Melrose’s Grace Brang and Madison Rausch 6-3, 6-3. Brang and Rausch finished third.

In other doubles matches B/KMS’ Kendra Dingmann and Melanie Reese lost to Osakis’ Anderson and Hoffarth 6-2, 6-0 on Monday, and Morris/CA’s Carly Gullickson and Kjersa Anderson dropped their Monday match to Osakis Katelyn Foster and Peyton Garcia 6-0, 6-2.

In singles, B/KMS’ Maggie Buyck placed fourth, falling to Melrose’s Elisha Engelmeyer 6-2, 6-3 in the section third-place match. Buyck advanced with wins over Sauk Centre’s Morgan Kranz (6-3, 6-0) and West Central Area’s Lauryn McLaughlin (7-5, 6-4) before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Osakis’ Kraemer in the semifinals.

In other singles matches, Minnewaska’s Hannah Freske won her first match Monday over Parkers Prairie’s Renee Warren 6-7 (8-10), 6-1, 6-1 before losing to Sauk Centre’s Ellis 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the quarterfinals.

The Lakers’ Myranda Thoen won a play-in match, 6-1, 6-2 over LPGE/USA’s Lupita Mora before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Kraemer.

Morris/CA’s Abbie Olson lost to Melrose’s Jailyn Brinkman 6-0, 6-1 on Monday, and B/KMS’ Raquel Curriel fell to Engelmeyer in Monday’s first round 6-2, 6-0.
