Girls tennis roundup: Alex rolls past Willmar

ALEXANDRIA -- The Alexandria girls tennis team proved why it currently is the top seed the the North half of Section 8AA with a 6-1 victory over Willmar on Tuesday.

Alexandria improved to 14-1.

"They're just a really tough team," Willmar head coach Jim Anderson said. "Our girls gave them their best shot."

Hanna Hansen picked up Willmar's lone win at 4-singles.

"Hanna played a very disciplined match against a good Alex player (Bria Schuler)," Anderson said.

The Cardinals, currently the No. 2 seed in the South half of 8AA, play the sub-section's top team, St. Cloud Tech, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Cloud.

A sweep in doubles propelled New London-Spicer past MACCRAY 5-2 Tuesday in a non-conference match.

Kristen Lewis/Wally Gustafson at No. 1, Louise Lungstrom/Reiley Ness at No. 2 and Anna Cook/Kendra Gronseth at No. 3 all won their doubles matches in straight sets.

The Wildcats also had Lisa Dobbelaere at No. 1 and Abby Nelson at No. 2 win in straight sets in singles.

MACCRAY's two points came from Jenna Mersbergen at 3-singles and Kim Trulock at 4-singles.
