Girls tennis roundup: Alex takes out Willmar

ALEXANDRIA — No. 1 Cayle Hovland and No. 2 Hannah Hansen won the top singles spots for Willmar Thursday, but Alexandria won the remaining five matches to collect a 5-2 Central Lakes Conference win.

Hovland lost the opening set 6-1 before winning 6-4, 6-4. Hovland was down 4-0 in the third set before collecting the final six games. Willmar was given a point at 2-singles when Alexandria’s Carly Snell had to retire early against Hansen due to an injury.

Alexandria beat Willmar 6-1 six days earlier.

Willmar next plays on Monday when it hosts Marshall in a non-conference match.

BENSON — A three-set win at 4-singles from Katie Samuelson propelled Benson past Montevideo 4-3 Thursday in a West Central Conference dual.

Samuelson upended Tina Lipinski 6-2 in the opening set before Lipinski forced a decisive third set by winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-3. Samuelson then outlasted Lipinski 7-5 to give Benson (3-3, 8-8) its fourth win on the day.

The Braves also got points from Susan Zniewski (No. 1) and Raquel Curriel (No. 2) in singles and the 1-doubles duo of Kendra Dingmann and Kelsey Rajewsky.

Ashley Hoehne at 3-singles, Jessa Kack/Mikaela Erickson at 2-doubles and Avery Koosmann/Natasha Smith at 3-doubles picked up wins for Montevideo (4-5, 11-8).

The Dragons (1-7) got their first win in conference  play. The match was decided at 1-doubles where Kennedy Sommerfeld/Kalley Spreiter won 6-4, 7-6 for the fourth point as the visitors swept doubles on the White Hawks courts. Shanna Kinny, at the 4-spot, picked up Litchfield’s point at singles.
