WILLMAR — Santa brought you a fist full of gift cards this year? Grandma gave you more money to spend this holiday season?

After-Christmas holiday shopping can be a frugal person’s wonderland, with deep discounts on clothing, holiday decorations and furniture. Chocolate lovers can also save significantly on their favorite sweets, according to www.kiplinger.com.

And, if you are still looking for an HDTV, expect to save up to 70 percent on name-brand models after Christmas, because the new models are released in January, according to the finance advice magazine’s website. Similar discounts can be expected on cameras, laptops and tablets.

A survey by RetailMeNot shows that 79 percent of consumers plan to shop the end-of-year sales and 9 of 10 of consumers received gift cards as a holiday present.

Even if their friends and relatives attempted to give the right thing, nearly half of consumers say they typically end up returning something they receive for the holidays. That’s right, 42 percent of us stand in the return line. Parents are more likely, 54 percent, than non-parents, 37 percent, to return gifts.

The survey also finds that 35 percent of consumers purchased a gift for themselves after the holidays because no one bought it for them as a gift.

According to the website www.savingadvice.com, the best items to buy after Christmas include gift cards, purchased from the secondary market to any store where you regularly shop. Think of it this way, other people turn in their gift cards for what they really want, money, and you swoop in to get a deep discount.

Especially useful for your New Year’s party are wine and beer, which are usually discounted after Christmas has passed. While wine keeps well, beer doesn’t have a long shelf life. That’s just fine because football season isn’t over yet either.

For those who have children in their lives, after holiday shopping may be a great time to stock up on gifts for upcoming birthday parties, according to the website. Toy retailers offer big discounts in their efforts to cut stock, giving astute shoppers the opportunity to purchase quality toys at low prices.

Getting your Christmas paper products restocked and your decorating items organized is also cheaper after the holidays, with sales on gift boxes, wrapping paper and paper plates, cups, napkins and other items for holiday entertaining.

And, bins for storing the Christmas decorations and all those boughs of holly are likely on sale. And since the storage bins go into the rafters of the garage or the depths of basement storage, it really doesn’t matter what color they are.
