Golf: Jacobson, Team Minn. in tie for 31st place
GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Andy Jacobson of Willmar and Eagle Creek Golf Club shot 41-35-76 on Thursday at the 10th USGA Men's State Team Championship held at Galloway National Golf Club.
Matt Schneider of Cohasset also shot 36-40-76 for Minnesota's 152 total, two-strokes under Wednesday's 154. Jesse Larson of Shakopee shot 39-40-79 and for the second day in a row. His score was not used.
The North Star State's team is tied for 31st place with Illinois and New Hampshire at 306.
New York leads with a 285 total, one-over-par.
The tournament, which features the best non-collegiate amateurs from all 50 states plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, concludes today.
"This is such a great experience," Jacobson said in phone call from Galloway on Thursday evening. "Everything is first class. It's really a treat. The course is probably as tough as I've ever played."
Jacobson shot 76 in the opening round but each team member got a penalty stroke for slow play. Three of the first five teams were assessed a penalty, he said.
"The USGA is really strict and our team captain had warned us," said Jacobson. "I did all I could to keep position but they are rigorous because there are so many groups to push through.
On Thursday, Jacobson got off to a horrible start, three-putting the first hole and then posting back-to-back double bogeys.
"I was on the way to shooting a 90," he said. "There's no birdie holes out there but I was really solid on the back.
But he recovered with a 41 for his first nine and then a one-under 35 coming in.
He tees off at about 8 a.m. eastern time today.
