LUVERNE -- Goodwin Carroll Johnson, 77, of Luverne, formerly of Sacred Heart, died Thursday at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home of Renville.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1930, in Sacred Heart to George and Christine (Heen) Johnson. He graduated in 1948 from Granite Falls High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1955.
He married Barbara Summers on March 18, 1954, while stationed in Okinawa. They later lived and farmed in rural Sacred Heart until 1969, when they moved into Sacred Heart. He then worked at Rogers Hydraulic in Granite Falls. He entered the Luverne Veterans Home in 2000.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Sacred Heart VFW.
He is survived by his wife; children: Christine Mobley of Hutchinson, Carole Hawkes of Waterville, Maine, Wanda (and Bill) Brandt of Granite Falls, Brenda (and Martin) Leibolt of Woodbridge, Va., Joan (and George) Harris of Las Vegas, Nev., Shelly Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev., Sarah (and Roger) Wharton of Willmar, and James (and Andrea) Johnson of Willmar; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; siblings: Vernon and Paul Johnson of Sacred Heart, and Virginia Wearda of Willmar.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
