Grand Forks man charged after son eats pot-laced cookie

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A Grand Forks man was charged with a felony after his 9-year-old son found a marijuana-laced cookie in a kitchen cupboard and ate it.

Nathan Bazey, 26, told an investigator he knew the cookie was in the cupboard but didn't learn the child had eaten it until later, according to court documents.

Bazey is charged with child abuse or neglect, a Class C felony that carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The charge was filed earlier this month in state district court in Grand Forks. The incident occurred in November 2008, according to the complaint against Bazey.

A report from social services triggered the police investigation.

In court Monday, Magistrate David Vigeland told Bazey to comply with any recommendations from social services and set his bond at $1,500. Bazey bailed out of Grand Forks County jail the same day.

Bazey told the Herald he was in the shower when his son came across the cookie and ate it.

"Something happened that shouldn't have happened," he said. "It was an accident."

His next court date is April 29.
