GRANITE FALLS — A proposal by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System to tear down a portion of the Minnesota West Technical and Community College building in Granite Falls will be the focus of a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the school’s cafeteria.

Organizers are inviting anyone with an interest in the future of the school to attend the meeting.

A proposal that is expected to be part of MnSCU’s bonding request to the Legislature calls for tearing down the 300 building.

David Yeager, a retired instructor at the campus, said a citizens group is hoping to convince MnSCU to leave the 300 building intact. It was erected in the 1980s and has been well-maintained. At the very least, it could offer much needed building space in the community for other nonprofit organizations if not used by the school, he explained.

The group would prefer to see the space kept in use to offer educational programs. A number of ideas are being raised, including the possibility of offering programs to introduce high school students to a variety of hands on career opportunities requiring technical skills, he said.
