Gymnastics: Cardinals soar past Sartell

WILLMAR — What’s new with the Willmar Cardinal gymnasts?
The youthful lineup made its home debut Thursday night in the brightly lit Kennedy gym.
The team scored a victory over the Sartell Sabres by a score of 136.525 to 130.625. This came after a road loss to start the season at Sauk Rapids where the Cards tallied 134.95.
Performances were solid and there was just one fall on vault. Though young this team has plenty of experience.
Stephanie Thompson was first all-around (35.050) and in three of the four individual events.
Cassandra Johnson, the team’s lone senior, finished first in floor (9.225). The rest of last night’s scorers were either 9th or 10th graders.
“We tried some new routines so there were a lot of mistakes,” said coach Larry Selchow. “Stephanie and Cassie led the team and Maddie (Lindblad) had her best vault.”
Vault got Willmar off to a good start scoring 36.2. Thompson rated at 9.3 and Johnson and Lindblad both 9.0.
Typically, Willmar scored low in bar though the 30.775 score shaded the Sabres.
Thompson had Willmar’s only fall on the beam but her difficulty was still enough to win with an 8.85. She stuck a couple of somersaults to the crowds delight.
Johnson finished meet with a flourish with a winning total of 9.225 on the floor exercise.
Willmar hosts Litchfield on Tuesday.
