WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals finished strong with a superlative performance on the floor but fell short of picking up a Central Lakes Conference victory on Thursday in the home opener.

Sauk Rapids outscored Willmar 135.45 to 134.35, just 1.10 apart after the four events.

"I was thrilled," said Willmar coach Larry Selchow. "Our floor routines all the way through the lineup was wonderful. It was exciting and fun."

Abbey Weiler and Stephanie Thompson finished 1-2 in all-around and Cassie Johnson placed fourth for Willmar.

Each won an event.

"This was a big improvement," said Selchow. "We just have to finish our routines. We had 3 falls on both beam and bars otherwise we could have won."
