'Gypsy' musical now playing on The Barn stage through June 28 in Willmar, Minn.
rom its legendary opening overture to the last spotlight, Gypsy is considered by many to be “the best musical ever.”
This medley of life in the theater during the 1920s tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer turned burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee, played by Gretchen Otness, and her domineering, overbearing mother, Rose, played by Nicole Dyson, as Rose battles stage directors, theater owners and hotel managers in her efforts to push her two daughters toward stardom during the dying days of vaudeville.The score boasts such classics as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “All I Need is The Girl,” “Together Wherever We Go,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “You Gotta Get a Gimmick,” and “Some People.”Other cast members are Tim Ostby, Laura Miller, Brock Geselius, Ashleigh Gulden, Melissa S. Mangen, Kirstyn Harasyn, Cecilia Buzzeo, Emily Malmgren, Andrew Benson, James Statz, Colleen Dorsey, John Heath, Nate Lundstrum, Ben Watson, Gavin Sietsema, Shane Martin, Doug Wilkowske, Ace Bonnema, Erica Ellingson, Rhiley Schmidt, Kathryn Freeman, Taylor Banta, Alaina Swanson, Heather Bonnema, Paige Benson, Jen Harasyn, Grace Lynum, Mihee Malmgren, Thomas Bonnema, Jan Buzzeo, Will Cantor-Jones.Tamara McClintock is the director/choreographer.Technical director Aane Twedt produced an interactive set with help from backdrop designer Craig Shellady and light designer Dan Benoit. Twedt and Taylor Banta painted the backdrops.Pauline Prawl is the choreographer and costumer, along with her costume assistant Marie Ostby. Seamstresses were Elizabeth Hyttsten, Cathy Pregler, Audrey Buzzeo and Susan Thorson.Kirstyn Harasyn is in charge of props. Becky Sorenson returns as stage manager with Sabrina Rime as her assistant.The pit orchestra is conducted by Dennis Benson with Craig Kimmerle on piano.Kathryn Freeman was the vocal director and Carol Parker was the audition/rehearsal pianist.
