FOOTBALL: A three-year starter and letterwinner, Essler helped the Wildcats win the Class AA state crown as a running back, defensive back, return man and long snapper. He ran for 1,120 yards and 15 touchdowns his senior year, caught a touchdown pass, and returned a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown. On defense, Essler made 62 tackles and intercepted three passes. In his career, he made 198 tackles with five interceptions.
BASKETBALL: Essler lettered two years and was a key reserve on the Wildcats' Class AA state champion team this past winter. He averaged 2.7 points, including 18 three-pointers, and 1.2 assists per game as New London-Spicer went 32-2 this season. He was a 77 percent free-throw shooter.
TRACK: A six-time letterwinner, Essler has been on three different relay teams that finished in the top three in the West Central North Conference six times in all. He was also part of the 4x800 relay that won a section title in 2008 and was second in 2009. The 2008 team was seventh in state.
