Hanley S. Hatlestad Dec. 26, 1929 - Dec. 8, 2012
NEW LONDON - Hanley S. Hatlestad age 82, of New London died on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at his home in rural New London. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake, in rural New London. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 5-8:00 pm with a prayer service being held at 7:30 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in New London. The visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Hanley Samuel Hatlestad was born on Dec. 26, 1929, on a farm in Arctander Township, the son of Cornell and Geoline (Rood) Hatlestad. His family moved to the family farm in Lake Andrew Township when Hanley was a young boy. He was baptized on Feb. 16, 1930 at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake and confirmed into the Christian faith on June 27, 1943. He grew up on the family farm and attended Country School District #69. After his schooling he farmed with his family. On July 21, 1954 Hanley entered the U. S. Army where he was stationed in Alaska on the Aleutian Islands. On Feb. 29, 1956 he was honorably discharged and returned home to continue farming. Hanley farmed with his brothers, and later his nephew his entire life and was involved with the farm until his death.
Hanley was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, church council member and usher. He was a member of the New London American Legion Post #537 and had been on the New London Creamery Association Board of Directors for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and was a loyal patron of McKales Café in New London. Hanley will be remembered for his humor, gentle spirit, love of animals and dedication to his family and the family farm.
He is survived by his siblings, Ellsworth (Doris) Hatlestad of New London, Gladys (Howard) Powers of Hawick, and Edward Hatlestad of Willmar; nephews, Phil (Carolyn) Hatlestad, John (Kay) Hatlestad, Don (Nancy) Powers, Larry (Melanie) Powers; nieces, Elaine Hayes, Lynn (Craig) Edwards, Diane (Jim) Thompson, and Naomi Baker; many great nephews and nieces.
Hanley was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sherlyn; and nephew, Tim Baker.
