The American Red Cross conducts blood drives in the west central area. To give blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors are encouraged to eat iron-rich foods in the week before donating. You can give blood every 56 days. Double red cells can be donated every 112 days.
All donors need acceptable identification.
While all blood types are needed, type O and type B-negative donors are especially encouraged to give.

Hope for Recovery
LITCHFIELD -- The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Minnesota will hold a free one-day education workshop that provides families and individuals with information on mental illnesses, practical coping strategies, and hope for recovery.

WILLMAR -- The Kandiyohi Public Health Service will hold an immunization clinic from 10 a.m. to noon March 2 in Suite 1080 at the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services Building, 2200 23rd St. N.E., in Willmar.
All childhood vaccinations are available. Children's vaccines are $10 for the first and $5 for each additional per person.
A tetanus booster for adults that is recommended every 10 years is also available along with other adult vaccinations. Fees vary from $20 to $35.

Parents are asked to bring immunization records to the clinic for accurate record keeping.
WILLMAR -- The clinic hours at Planned Parenthood, 2320 U.S. Highway 12 E., Willmar for family planning and reproductive health services for women and men may vary. Call 320-235-9150 for hours and appointments. Most insurance plans accepted. Interpreter services are available.
ST. CLOUD -- The American Red Cross in St. Cloud has free and confidential oral HIV testing from 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday. Appointments are required. Call 320-251-7641 and ask for Susie.
Rice Health Foundation
WILLMAR -- The Rice Health Foundation announces a March 1 deadline for accepting grant applications.
Rice Health Foundation provides funding for the Rice organization and west central Minnesota to address community health needs and enhance patient care and health education in the communities served by Rice Memorial Hospital.
The foundation has approximately $17,000 to be awarded to community programs and services during the first grant cycle of 2009.
Organizations applying for a grant must be a nonprofit charitable organization designated 501c3 by the Internal Revenue Service. Grant proposals will be accepted from nonprofit organizations that meet one or more of these criteria:
- Provide health care services and programs to Rice Memorial Hospital patients and families.
- Clearly show evidence of collaboration with organizations that have similar missions for optimum community impact.
- Initiate or support health-related programs in response to expressed community needs.
- Provide support for preventive and health education initiatives.
- Focus on programming and services, rather than capital equipment. Capital equipment requests must be related to the health care program described.
