Heat advisory issued for west central Minnesota

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of west central and northwest Minnesota, predicting that the heat index will reach into the low 100-degree range.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday for much of west central Minne-sota. While temperatures will only range in the low to mid 90s in the region, the heat index -- the summertime counterpart to wind chill -- is expected to rise past 100 degrees.

Willmar will see partly cloudy skies this afternoon, with highs 90 to 95 and south winds 5 to 15 mph. Willmar Municipal Utilities has issued an energy alert Wednesday asking customers to minimize their energy usage. Thursday will bring a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning and a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The western part of the region, including Benson, Granite Falls, Madison, Montevideo, Morris, and Glenwood, remains under the heat advisory. This area will see temperatures around 95 this afternoon with partly cloudy skies and south winds about 10 mph. The eastern sector of the region, including Litchfield, Olivia, Paynesville and Redwood Falls, will have highs between 90-95 with partly cloudy skies and south winds around 5 to 15 mph. Thursday will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
