Heat index expected to reach low 100s this afternoon for Willmar and parts of west central Minn.
A heat advisory remains in effect from Noon until 8 p.m. today for much of west central Minnesota. This area impacted includes Kandiyohi, Redwood, Renville and Stearns counties and areas eastward through the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Hot and humid conditions will return to this area this afternoon as a warm front lifts north of area.
Heat index values are forecast to reach 97 to 103 degrees.
Counties west of Kandiyohi County are not expected to have heat index values near 100.
Heat related stress and illness are possible, especially for the young, elderly, those without air conditions and people participating in strenuous outdoor activities.
Anyone working or spending time outside this afternoon are urged to take extra precautions. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to cool and shaded location.
The hot and humid air mass will be short lived as a cold front moves across the area tonight. Expect cooler and drier conditions for west central Minnesota by Tuesday.
