Heavy snow falling this morning in Willmar, Minn., and the region

WILLMAR - Heavy snow is falling in Willmar and the region this morning.

The National Weather Service reports that the automated Willmar Municipal Airport feed as of 5 a.m. showed heavy snow. The airport in Olivia also reported heavy snow, and airports in Granite Falls and Montevideo and Litchfield report snow. No report was available in Benson, but the Appleton airport reported snow.

Several schools in the region are closed today, and others are starting classes late.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reports difficult driving across most of the region. On MnDOT's 511 traffic and road condition website, drifting snow and reduced visibility are reported in many areas, and wet and slippery conditions as well.

The winter storm warning that includes Willmar and all of central Minnesota remains in effect through 6 p.m. today. Yellow Medicine and Renville counties and a swath of southern Minnesota is under a winter weather advisory. The Weather Service says periods of heavy snow will continue this morning, and sustained winds will produce low visibilities at times.
