Hengstler-Ranweiler Awards have 35 nominees

Although an official banquet will not be held this year, the West Central Tribune will still present Hengstler-Ranweiler awards to the outstanding male and female high school athletes in the area.

We will continue to give out plaques to the winners and certificates to each of the nominees.

Another change being made this year with the award is that the nominees are not shown periodically in the paper. Instead, we will have the nominees appearing on an entire page over three consecutive days beginning on Monday so that readers can better judge who each nominee is up against. In past years, the nominations were spread over an entire month.

The winner will be announced on June 6.

The Tribune will make a decision whether or not to return the banquet as part of the H-R award ceremony next season.

The H-R award is named after Herb Hengstler and Lefty Ranweiler, two longtime sports editors at the Tribune. To be eligible for nomination, athletes must have been in at least three sports through their senior year, must have been named all-conference in at least two of the three, and must not have had a Minnesota State High School League violation of any kind while a varsity athlete, regardless of the grade they were in at the time.

Tyler Grey of Montevideo and Megan Groen of Renville County West were the male and female winners, respectively, last year.
