Herbert R. Golnitz June 14, 1914 - May 15, 2009
NEW LONDON -- Herbert Roy Golnitz, 94, of New London, formerly of Hawick, died Friday at GlenOaks Care Center in New London.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hawick United Methodist Church in Hawick. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
He was born June 14, 1914, in Afton Township, Iowa, to Wilhelm and Carolina (Miller) Golnitz. He attended school in Brooke Township, Iowa, and worked at the family farm.
On June 18, 1944, he married Dorothy Hansenwinkel. The couple continued to farm in Afton Township until moving, in 1947, to a farm near Priam where they farmed until 1966.
He also worked at the Willmar State Hospital for 15 years. In 1969, he began working for Star Machine in Minneapolis. After the death of his wife in 1970, he continued to work in Minneapolis.
He married Phyllis Rhuby on March 19, 1971, in Hanover. They lived in Rockford. He retired in 1977. In 1980, they moved to Hawick, where they lived for 17 years. They moved into New London in 2007.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Raymond, serving as an elder. At the time of his death, he was a member of Hawick United Methodist Church where he volunteered doing odd jobs and helped with lawn mowing. He was also a member of the Roseville Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife; daughter: Char (and Jim) Gatewood of Princeton; stepchildren: Ramona (and Fred) Evanski of Buda, Texas, Larry (and Marie) Rhuby of Brainerd and Linda Rhuby of Corcoran; stepdaughter-in-law: Shirlene Rhuby of Aurora, Colo.; son-in-law: Duane Barrett of Osakis; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son: Virgil; a daughter: Sandra; a great-granddaughter; two sisters; and a stepson: Randy.
