WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service says extremely strong winds are likely today and Wednesday for a large portion of central and southern Minnesota.
A high wind warning is in effect from 7 a.m. today until 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are likely. The winds are in response to a strengthening low pressure system moving north across the state today.
Open areas and higher terrain are most likely to see highest wind speeds.
The strong winds could lead to downed trees and power lines, as well as minor damage to structures. Loose outdoor objects that are not secured may be blown away.
Drivers, especially of high-profile or lightweight vehicles, are urged to be aware of the winds.
The winds are expected to diminish overnight, but pick back up Wednesday before diminishing again in the afternoon, the weather service says.
