Highway 12 west of Murdock to remain closed as ammonia continues to leak from accident site
MURDOCK — U.S. Highway 12 west of Murdock will remain closed into this evening, and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
Traffic will continue to be detoured around the area.
Emergency crews are continuing efforts to stop the escape of anhydrous ammonia from a tank involved in a train and semi-truck collision around 8:30 a.m.
Four people were transported to the Swift County-Benson Hospital for anhydrous ammonia inhalation, the Swift County Sheriff’s Department reported this afternoon. Two of those people were transported by Lifelink to other area hospitals.
The tank held roughly 9,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia, and roughly one-half of that amount has escaped or been transferred to another tank. A hazardous material crew is attempting to move material from the damaged tank to another.
Anhydrous ammonia escaping from the tank is drifting north-northwest across Highway 12. Residents within a two mile radius of this accident scene are asked to stay away from the scene.
