Horsepower on the trail, horsepower for sale
In the two photographs by the Tribune's Rand Middleton, two distinct examples of horsepower were on display on Christmas Day.
Two-horsepower worked well on the Glacial Lakes State Trail on Christmas Day when snowmobiles remained grounded by a nearly snowless December, including this trio of idle sleds on Fourth Avenue in Spicer.
Meantime, riders up approaching the Nest Lake Foot Bridge are Jim Nelson, left in the photo, from Paint Rock Ranch near Lake Florida, on Mooner, and his son Tanor Nelson of New London aboard Cowboy.
The men rode their American Paint horses from the Nest Lake access to New London to visit residents at the Glenoaks living center, a Christmas-day custom for 12 winters. The Nelsons said that a year ago snow was chest- deep, forcing them to ride on plowed streets only in New London.
