Hutchinson wins VFW tourney; NLS I takes 3rd

WILLMAR -- Hutchinson beat Watertown I by a 7-4 score on Sunday afternoon at Baker Field to capture first-place at the third annual Willmar/New London-Spicer VFW 16U Central Minnesota Classic.

New London-Spicer I topped Willmar 11-6 on Sunday morning for third-place (see below).

In other outcomes, Paynesville drilled Granite Falls 13-3 for the consolation championship. The seventh-place game went to Watertown II who beat New London-Spicer I 10-0.

In Saturday's semifinals, Watertown I beat Willmar 5-0 and Hutchinson dropped NLS I 10-2.

NLS's Grant Vagle knock-ed in four runs with a sac fly in the first, a two-run single in the fourth and a base-loaded walk in fifth.

Jordan Payne was 2-for-3 and scored three runs as NLS built an 11-4 lead with back-to-back four-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Willmar starter Patrick Courtney had to be relieved in the first inning when his back tightened up.

Tyler Gislason threw six innings for the win. He gave up nine hits but walked just one while fanning seven.

Josh Warne was the big stick for Willmar (7-6). He went 4-for-4, doubled, drove in a run and scored three times.
