Hwy. 12 detour in east Willmar leads to traffic issues
WILLMAR — Barely a week after a detour went into place for construction on U.S. Highway 12 on the east edge of Willmar, traffic issues have prompted extra patrolling by Willmar Police.
Some motorists reportedly have driven around signs and over medians at Highway 12 and the Highway 71 South bypass, leading to a few close calls with head-on collisions.
On Friday a driver also was cited for driving around the barrier at Highway 12 and County Road 9.
The detour and construction began on July 7. The $3 million project spans the Highway 71/23 bypass bridge. It involves removing the concrete pavement and replacing it with bituminous paving. New turn lanes and an extension of the median also are planned.
Completion is expected in November.
