Hwy. 59 shoulders to be widened south of Clarkfield
WASHINGTON -- An $889,200 safety grant from the Department of Transportation will make it possible to widen the shoulders on U.S. Highway 59 from Clarkfield to Marshall, U.S. Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Collin Peterson have announced.
The project was sought by the Yellow Medicine County Board of Commissioners. At the urging of Commissioner Gary Johnson, of rural Clarkfield, the board passed resolutions and made repeated requests to the Minnesota Department of Transportation and legislators for the work in recent years.
Traffic counts on the road and funding limitations put the project lower on the priority list for district road projects than advocates wanted.
"Widening Highway 59 will help ensure safe transit for people and goods," Franken said in a news release.
"Improving road quality and safety benefits everyone," Peterson said.
