Hosted by the Kandiyohi County Veterans Service Office, the meeting will include a legislative update on a proposal to build a 90-bed veterans home here that would specialize in mental health care.

Partial funding for the home was approved in the 2009 House supplemental bonding bill but is not included in the Senate bonding bill.

"There have been numerous inquiries on the proposal, and we would like to provide as much information to concerned veterans and their families as possible," said Trisha Appeldorn, Kandiyohi County veterans service officer.

"The proposal for the veterans home in Kandiyohi County is vital to our area and to the veterans that live in this community," she said.

Other Minnesota communities, including Montevideo, are also seeking funding for construction of a veterans home.

Legislative action may be delayed on all new veterans home proposals until 2010 when the Legislature will take up a full bonding bill.

Steve Renquist, executive director of the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Authority, will provide the latest information about the Willmar proposal, according to a news release from the county veterans service office.

Veterans will also hear information about other activities, including property tax exclusion benefits for disabled veterans, a June 13 event to honor Minnesota Vietnam veterans and information about "Let's Go Fishing" excursions for county veterans.

There will also be information about travel pay for qualified veterans going to VA medical facilities and updates on other medical programs.

The meeting will be in the back room of the Willmar American Legion.

Reservations are preferred and can be made by calling the Kandiyohi County Veterans Service Office at 320-231-6227.
