Ex-Willmar Cards Swanson, Ramey, Dorsey coach in Class AAAA quarterfinals
Three former Willmar Cardinals, each a three-sport athlete in high school, were involved as coaches during the state boys basketball Class AAAA quarterfinals on Wednesday at Target Center in Minneapolis.
Scott Swanson (’74), head coach at Woodbury, saw his No. 4 Royals (25-4) fall to No. 5 Eden Prairie (25-4) 70-59.
Brainerd assistant coach Jeff Ramey (’82) and the unseeded Warriors (28-2) led No. 1 Apple Valley (30-1) by two at half but succumbed 81-67 to the Eagles and their highly-recruited 6-foot-2 junior point guard Tyus Jones, who contributed 19 points, 7 assists and 6 steals.
No. 3 Edina, coached by Patrick Dorsey (’88), swamped unseeded Andover (10-20) 99-61 behind 40 points on 66 percent shooting by senior guard Graham Woodward.
The Hornets then fell 66-44 to No. 2 Park Center in the semifinals Thursday evening at the Target Center.
Henrickson’s Jayhawks in women’s NCAA basketball tournament
Willmar native Bonnie Henrickson, a 1,000-point scorer for both the Willmar Cardinals and St. Cloud State Huskies, has the Kansas Jayhawks in their second straight NCAA women’s basketball tournament as the No. 12-seed in the Norfork Regional.
The Jayhawks (18-13) will play No. 5-seeded Colorado (25-6) on Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m., at the Coors Events Center in Boulder, Colo. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
