LDC girls stun Scarlets for first state hockey trip

The Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Dragons (10-17) advanced to the Class A State Girls Hockey Tournament by edging top-seeded Mankato East/Loyola 3-2 Thursday in the Section 3A championship at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

By its record and unranked status, LDC will be placed in a random draw to play one of the top three seeds in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

During the regular season, Mankato East/Loyola beat LDC 3-2 on Nov. 23 in Litchfield.

Willmar grapplers seek 6AAA title Saturday

The Willmar Cardinals are the top seed at Saturday’s single-day, 10-team Section 6AAA wrestling tournament at Wayzata High School in Plymouth.

The Cardinals open at approximately 10:15 a.m. vs. the winner of the (8) Buffalo vs. (9) Minneapolis South pigtail match.

No. 4 Minnetonka and (5) Wayzata are in the opposite quarterfinal bracket. The semifinals round is scheduled for noon and the championship for 2 p.m.

Mound Westonka is the No. 2 seed and Willmar (16-3) is the two-time defending champion.

Section 6A gym meet Saturday at Litchfield

Willmar and five other area gymnastics teams will be competing for Section 6A honors Saturday at Litchfield High School with a 1 p.m. start.

Melrose is the heavy favorite for team advancement, but individuals can earn a place in the State Class A Meet by placing in one or more individual events plus all-around.

Competing from the area are Benson/KMS, Litchfield, Morris/Chokio-Alberta, Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins and New London-Spicer.
