Cardinals host Worthington Tuesday in 2AAA boys hoops
The No. 6 seed Worthington Trojans (8-14) play at No. 3 Willmar (18-7) today at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the Section 2AAA boys basketball tournament. The Cardinals won at Worthington 84-76 on Jan. 25.
The winner moves on to the Taylor Center in Mankato to play either (7) New Ulm (4-21) or (2) Mankato West (16-8) in the semifinals on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
Cardinals having fan bus for state wrestling meet
A fan bus is available, sponsored by the Willmar Takedown Club, for the Class AAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The cost is $5 person.
Loading is 5:45 a.m. at the Willmar Senior High School athletic wing with departure at 6 a.m., and will leave for the return trip 30 minutes after Willmar’s last match. Sign up at high school office or call Mike Swanson 612-875-2451.
Deadline is noon Wednesday.
The Cardinals wrestle Hastings at 9 a.m. in their opener.
Willmar tickets on sale for state wrestling meet
Tickets for Session No. 1 (team) of the state wrestling tournament are on sale at the Willmar Senior High School commons Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day ($9 student, $14 adults).
Also available are Mat Rat t-shirts for $10.
ACGC to have fan bus for state wrestling appearance
A sign-up is available to take a fan bus to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul to see the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Falcons wrestle at the Class A State Team Tournament Thursday.
The cost is $10 and the bus will leave the ACGC High School at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday and will leave the Xcel Energy Center 20 minutes after the conclusion of the Falcons’ last dual that day. Deadline to reserve a spot is noon on Wednesday at the High School office.
The Falcons’ first match is at 9 a.m.
Tickets for the first session of competition, which includes the quarterfinals and the second-round matches, are also available for purchase at the High School office. Tickets for adults are $14 and a student ticket is $9. They will be available for purchase ending today during school hours.
Candle-light cross country skiing event now March 4
The evening cross country ski event that was scheduled for today, has been postponed to Tuesday, March 4, due to the frigid weather.
Dozens of ice candle luminaries will mark the trail for an evening cross country ski and snowshoe event at the Eagle Creek Golf Course ski trail in Willmar.
The Willmar Nordic Ski Club is hosting a candle-light ski open to all at no cost. Anyone interested and in need of equipment can make a reservation by contacting Brad Haugen at 320-444-2301. Equipment will be loaned at no charge.
In the event of unsuitable weather, the event will be rescheduled for Wednesday, March 5.
Lady Warriors will host Foxes for playoff berth
The Ridgewater College Lady Warriors meet the Fox Valley Technical College Foxes (6-15) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the college gym in Willmar. The winner advances to the Region 13A four-team playoff to meet top-seeded Anoka-Ramsey (22-3) at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Coon Rapids.
Ridgewater (13-10) and Western Wisconsin tied for fourth in the MCAC South Division, each with a 6-6 record. The LaCrosse college won the coin flip for the third seed and will play No. 2 Minnesota West at 8 p.m. on the Anoka campus.
Fox Valley Tech has campuses in Appleton and Oshkosh and its basketball teams play an independent schedule.
Willmar summer baseball, VFW sign up March 3
The Willmar Community Education and Recreation is having summer baseball sign-ups on Monday, March 3 at the middle school from 5-7 p.m.
The VFW baseball program is for 15 and 16-years-olds with one team this summer. There is a $50 down payment due at registration. Tryouts are May 22-23 at Swansson Blue from 5-8 p.m.
