BBE vs. Browerville moved to Alexandria

In a switch that makes sense travel-wise, the Section 5A championship game at 7 p.m. Friday between Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Browerville has been shifted to Alexandria.


Until Wednesday, the bracket had the final set at Crosby-Ironton High School.

BBE (27-1) hasn’t lost since the Granite City Classic in December to Apple Valley. Browerville (21-5), which lost to BBE 87-62 in Brooten on Jan. 25, has won 10 straight..

Hatlestad bows out in

D-II Super Regional

Augustana Vikings sophomore wrestler Shawn Hatlestad (New London-Spicer) went 1-2 competing in the toughest weight class at the NCAA Division II Super Regional III in Edmond, Okla.

After a victory in the first round at 149-pounds, Hatlestad lost to No. 2-ranked Edwin Cooper of Upper Iowa and then lost in the wrestle backs to end his season.

The weight class had each of the top five nationally ranked wrestlers.

SJU’s Henle qualifies

for DIII nationals

St. John’s University 141-pound sophomore Ben Henle (Spicer/New London-Spicer) finished second and was one of only two Johnnies’ wrestlers to qualify for nationals at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday in Minneapolis. Henle advances to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships March 14-15, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Top-seed Henle (19-9) went 2-1, losing 5-4 in the championship match, while teammates Ryan Michaelis (Monticello) won the 197 weight class to also advance.

NLS-Melrose tickets

Lower level tickets for the New London-Spicer vs. Melrose Section 6AA championship boys basketball game 6 p.m. Friday at St. Cloud State University, are on sale in the NLS Activities Office until noon Friday.  All tickets, adult and student, are general admission and cost is $9.  Upper level tickets are available at SCSU only. 

Jenny named

All-WIAC first-teamer

Wisconsin-Stout guard Aaron Jenny, a senior from Spicer, was a first team selection to the 2013-14 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball team.

The former New London-Spicer star made the team despite missing two games this season.

Jenny was third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 points per game, and he led the Blue Devils in rebounds at 5.5 per game and in assists with 2.0 per game.

Jenny was the team’s leading scorer in six games, and scored a career-best 24 points in a win over UW-Superior in December. Jenny led the team in rebounds in 10 games and had double-doubles in three games. Jenny led the team in free throw shooting percentage, hitting 67-of-86 charity shots (.779).

Irvin 5K registration opens March 13

Grandma’s Marathon announced that registration for the 21st annual William A. Irvin 5K opens at 12:01 a.m. on March 13.

The field limit for the 2014 race is 2,000 — an increase of 100 from last year when capacity was reached on April 25. To register, runners should visit beginning March 13, or call (218) 727-0947.

The 3.1-mile run begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 20, near the permanently docked William A. Irvin ore boat on Duluth’s waterfront and is the kickoff for running events during Grandma’s Marathon weekend.

Registration remains open for the 38th annual Grandma’s Marathon set for Saturday, June 21.

Despite the lottery entry process for the 24th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon being closed, there are a limited number of spots available through the race’s four charity partners.
