Goodwin, Thunstedt named to AP’s All-State 2nd Team
Mr. Basketball finalist and two-time state champion Brian Goodwin of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and New London-Spicer’s Taylor Thunstedt were honored by The Associated Press recently.
Goodwin was named to the boys All-State Second Team, the same team Thunstedt was selected to on the girls team. Thunstedt capped her prep career with a girls Tribune-high 2,766 points while Goodwin had 2,112 points, fifth on the Tribune’s boys career list.
The AP named Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones and Lakeville North’s J.P. Macura co-boys player of the year and its top girls player was Carlie Wagner of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.
BBE’s Goodwin to play in All-Star series
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa senior guard Brian Goodwin will compete in the 32nd annual Basketball All-Star Series Friday and Saturday.
Goodwin will play for the Gold team coached by Willmar native and retiring Woodbury head coach Scott Swansson.
Friday’s games are at 7 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. at St. Cloud State’s Halenbeck Hall. Saturday’s games are at 2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Leonard Center at Macalester College in St. Paul.
Dunk and 3-point shooting contests precede each of the four games.
Three area football players in All-Star Game
Three area players will be among the 88 prep stars competing in the Minnesota Football Coaches Association’s Tackle Cancer All-Star Football Game on June 28.
Dawson-Boyd senior quarterback Joey Lee and BOLD senior tight end Trevor Nissen will play for the South team coached by Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant. BOLD head coach Steve Solem is a South assistant coach.
New London-Spicer senior running back Adam Essler will play for the North team coached by Bill Weiss of Chisago Lakes Area.
Training camp begins June 22 at St. John’s University.
The All-Star Game is 1 p.m. on June 28 at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium.
The All-Star Football Game was first played in 1945 and has been an annual event since 1974.
