Deadline Friday to sign up for WCER co-rec, church softball leagues

The deadline to register for both WCER Wednesday night Co-Rec Softball and Thursday Night Church Softball is Friday.

St. Cloud Apollo grad named Hamline hockey coach

Cory Laylin, a 1988 graduate of St. Cloud Apollo, has been named head men’s hockey coach at Hamline University, where he was an assistant coach from 2008-10.

A Minnesota Gopher from 1988-92, scoring 58 goals, Laylin was general manager and head coach of the Brookings Blizzard of the North American Hockey League the past two years.

Laylin played 16 seasons professionally, much of it overseas, plus four seasons of professional roller hockey.

He was a two-time All-Central Lakes Conference selection, including 1986-87 when the Eagles finished second to Willmar.

Rambow hitting .295 for Valley City State

Sophomore infielder Jake Rambow (Willmar) is batting .295 with 22 runs scored, six extra-base hits and 19 RBI for the Valley City State University Vikings (18-27) this season.

In 40 games — 33 starts — Rambow has 33 hits with a team-high 20 walks.

Lotthammer 3-2 for Mayville State Comets

Junior left-hander Alex Lotthammer (Willmar) has started eight games for Mayville State University (37-12) this season.

Lotthammer has a 3-2 record in 11 games with a 5.10 ERA. In 30 innings he has 36 strikeouts and has walked 21 batters.

Ostrander helps Augustana to title

The Augustana College women’s golf captured its fifth straight NSIC championship on Sunday afternoon at Dakota Ridge in Morton, shooting a 324 in the fourth and final round to finish 33 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Concordia-St. Paul.

Allie Ostrander (Minnewaska) tied for third. She finished behind teammates Maggie Leland (Alexandria) and runner-up Marisa Toivonen (Red Wing).

It was the third straight top-five finish in the NSIC for Ostrander after shooting a 37-over-par 325 (79-83-82-81).
